Operation Beautiful Celebrates Valentine’s Day

As many of you know, February is Eating Disorder Awareness month. Operation Beautiful has some brilliant events planned for this month! The kick off event for Eating Disorder awareness month was our Kiss-A-Grams fundraiser on the commons. The OB team made goodie bags full of candy that were available for purchase throughout the weeks leading up to Valentines Day. The goodie bags could be anonymously delivered to a crush or loved one or you could deliver your goodie bag all on your own! At $3 a bag, the goodie bags were crammed full of yummy chocolates and Valentines Day treats. The fundraiser was a hit and the OB team is so happy to have started off on the right foot! Here’s to a great month of Eating Disorder Awareness!

Meet Our Exec: Molly

My goals for Operation Beautiful include educating people about eating disorders, addressing how each person can influence conversations about positive body talk, and offering the group as a place for resources and support.”

My Experience As A Body Image Ambassador

Hi there! My name is Allie Waller, and I’m currently serving as the Education Committee Head for Operation Beautiful.  One of my favorite responsibilities is keeping up with this blog.  I really hope this becomes an outlet for anyone looking for inspiration, assurance, a day-brightener, or just something to do.  My goal is to make this blog an interactive source of pictures, advice, and stories-with the help from our lovely exec team.  Look below for the “meet our exec” portions, and take a second to read about us.  Each of us has our own stories, experiences, and reasons for being promoters of healthy body image, and we want you to feel free to reach out to us.

I’ll tell you a little about why I’m such a firm believer in healthy body image.  I’m currently serving as a national ambassador for a campaign called “BodyImage3D,” launched by Delta Delta Delta this past October.  You can read more about this campaign in one of our earlier posts!  Below is a photo of me and the other five ambassadors-Lauren, Leah, Anna, and Emily. (I’m the second one from the right!)

Last spring, Tri Delta announced that they were looking for five girls to represent this brand new campaign promoting healthy body image.  They asked Tri Deltas to send in videos explaining what body image meant to them.  At the time, I didn’t know much about body image, but I knew it was something that was extremely important, so I thought I’d give it a shot!
Image^^ That’s nervous me in my audition video!  In it, I talked about body image being such a relatable topic.  Every girl can agree that we’ve all been hurt in some way, we’ve all dealt with certain things, and we’ve all worried about our outside appearance at some point in our lives.  But there will always be efforts that can be made toward bettering body image.  Every person deserves to feel beautiful.  At that point, I decided that I wanted to be an ambassador for that change.
A week later, I got an email informing me that I had been picked to be one of the five ambassadors.  I cried and cried-I was so honored! This past summer, they flew us out to Tri Delta headquarters in Arlington, Texas to get to know each other, to learn more about this campaign, and to take photos and create videos for promotional efforts.  It was truly an amazing experience getting to meet the other ambassadors and the executive team that works so hard to promote healthy body image!  I got to hear the other ambassadors tell their stories and experiences with body image-it was such a life-changing experience.

Right now, I still keep in close contact with the other ambassadors and the executive staff at Delta Delta Delta.  I hope that with my ambassadorship with BodyImage3D, I can reach out to others and encourage them to become promoters of healthy body image as well.  BodyImage3D is an awesome year-long campaign that introduces new themes each month that promote a healthy mind, body, and spirit.  This blog will keep you updated on those themes and present you with monthly challenges and advice!
Well, I hope you learned a little bit more about me through this post! I’m so honored to be a part of such an amazing organization as Operation Beautiful.  I hope you will be too!

“Body image is important to me because feeling good about yourself allows you to be happier, healthier, and accomplish more in life. We are all different and everyone is beautiful in their own way. From personal experiences I have learned how detrimental a lack of self-confidence and positive body image can be and have developed a passion for loving myself and instilling this in other women as well.

My goals for Operation Beautiful are to spread my passion for loving your body and the things about you that make you different as well as educating people on eating disorders and the media.”

“A healthy body image allows an individuals to focus on the important qualities of life; being happy and true to yourself and others. Today’s society creates the notion of thinness equaling beauty; where in fact, this could not be further from the truth. Beauty lies deep within the individual. A healthy body image allows someone to be confident and positive towards more important aspect of their days and lives.

As treasurer as Operation Beautiful I would like to help our fundraising team put on amazing events in order to spread the word about healthy body image and eating disorder awareness. I believe this club will do amazing things and affect more and more college students and neighboring children every year. I hope to inspire others to spread the word and idea that happy girls are the prettiest and everyone is beautiful in their own unique way.”

 

Indulge & Relax: New Year, New Look, New Panic? By Molly Robinson

Read below as Molly, our Education Co-Coordinator, speaks the truth about New Year’s dieting.  She explains why treating yourself to desert isn’t all that bad, and provides us with fun and healthy alternatives that JMU and Harrisonburg offer!

The holidays bring a lot of dessert and delectable food that we love, and, so when talk about resolutions begins, weight and dieting are the first items to cross most of our minds.

One of my friends said that she was looking into doing the Atkins diet after New Years. I told her that the founder of the diet, Robert Atkins suffered from a heart attack that some doctors think is due to his unbalanced nutrient intake.

Bottom line is that there is no easy fix for the urge to counterfeit the holiday indulgence, but there are simple solutions to feeling good about your body and to loose the negativity about holiday indulgences.

It’s ok to indulge. In fact, indulging in your favorite foods when you’re hungry is one way to fight off binge eating. I love ice cream, and I eat a bowl a day; this helps me ward away my desire to eat the entire gallon-seized carton on certain Saturday nights. I keep a bag of candy on my desk at all times and go for a handful when I want it. The Positivity Blog highlighted tips to fight binge eating and put no dieting at the top of their list. Also, if there is no medical reason that you need to worry about your weight, than weight loss after holidays should not be the instantaneous fix to negative emotion surrounding holiday indulgences.

Instead, indulge in your favorite foods when you want to. Having fatty or sugary foods (or in my case, both) in moderation is more than okay. Work in an activity weekly that helps you relax and maintain inner balance whether it’s yoga in UREC, the local puppy farm or lavender farm, or the Harrisonburg’s Farmer Market.

When learning how to create a healthy you in 2013, there are several great resources at JMU that can offer some comfort.  One is UREC’s Nutritional Analysis, where a nutritional  analyst meets with you to discuss decencies and excesses in your diet and how to approach a healthy meal plan.  Another resource is the HOPE (Help Overcome Problems with Eating and Exercise) program at JMU, which offers a dietitian.
